I’m reluctant to give feedback to a guy who has cuts with major artists and who writes a killer blog on the craft of songwriting (which possibly others are intimidated as well), but I will anyway.

Great, well crafted song! I especially like how you have used the chorus to advance the story rather than a repeatable summary. I’ve often heard that listeners look forward to the chorus as something repeatable and familiar. But I think it worked better in this song to continue to provide examples and let the melody be the repeatable part (plus the hook at the end of the chorus).

I guess this is an example of where breaking the “rules” made the song better.

Hi Brent. You’ve got some great lines in this song like “Fly with Angels, run with demons. Some days I’m just breaking even”. I like how the pacing of the song speeds up and the melody goes higher in the chorus. After first listen, I wasn’t sure if the hook in the song was strong enough to provide a resolution. I mean, sure God talks to you, but are you listening? I think the more times I listened to the song, I could see that you were showing that you are “starting to listen more” as the song develops through the choruses. It just feels like something is missing in the song to make it feel like a grand slam. I don’t know. Maybe, I’d just like to hear a line or two that demonstrates that you’ve learned and truly are listening to what God says instead of “Oh, but I believe”.

Just food for thought. I think the song is pretty good, but could be tweaked a little more to really get a full transfer of emotion (a resolution or payoff) that I was looking for. That will make the song great in my humble opinion.

God Talks To Me

Written by Brent Baxter

(Brent Baxter, Jason Cox, Michael Boggs)

VERSE: If you’re looking for perfect, well I ain’t
Sometimes a sinner more than saint
It seems like I spend most my time
In the gray between the black and white
Fly with angels, run with demons
Some days I’m just breaking even
Just ‘cuz I’m not the Sunday morning crowd
Don’t mean that I’m more lost than found
Oh, it might sound a little crazy
But oh, God talks to me

CHORUS:I heard Him in Mama’s prayers
Back when I didn’t care
He was telling me He was right there
And He spoke through the sound of a crash
In that metal and glass
Saying, “Son, you’re going way too fast”
You might not believe
But God talks to me
Yeah, God talks to me

VERSE: Well, I admit sometimes I miss Him
Too stubborn or just not listenin’
Yeah, but every time I tune Him out
He finds a way to me somehow
And oh, He whispers patiently
And oh, I hear Him eventually

CHORUS:I heard Him in the sound of goodbye
As I drove off and she cried
Said, “Son, swallow your pride”
Then He was in the song on the radio
As He led me back home
Saying, “Don’t let a girl like her go”
Oh, you might not believe
But God talks to me
Yeah, God talks to me

CHORUS:I heard Him in the wind and rain
By a good friend’s grave
Saying, “Live every breath you take”
And I heard Him as the choir sang
Amazing Grace
Saying, “You’ll see him again one day”
Oh, you might not believe
Oh, but I believe
Yeah, God talks to me
Yeah, God talks to me
