Woah, buddy! What a promising talent and knack for songwriting.

First off, you have a really great color and tone in your voice man, I’m digging that John Legend, Aloe Blacc influence and I think that voice of yours will only continue to grow the more you sing so (as long you want to sing) I’d encourage it because you’ve definitely got something. I will say that I think your pitch and intonation could use some improvement (based on this recording) but I also think that that’s very normal for young singers and can be improved/taught. I think concentrating on your breathing would be a great place to start, generally making sure you have plenty of air under you when you go to attack those notes, making sure you stay on top of them (particularly on those longer, more legato notes), and really working and exercising that diaphragm. There are plenty of breathing exercises you can do, and I’d also encourage some one on one vocal instruction (if you’re not already taking vocal lessons that is) But you have a very nice, mature tone in your voice that’s very promising, especially for someone your age, and you really can’t teach that so good for you my man.

As far as this song goes, it’s also really got a lot of good stuff going on. Your sense of melody is really strong both vocally and instrumentally. You have some great melody lines with some cool intervals. I really liked “When the light doesn’t shine, and you feel that you’re blind…all the way through walked out the door” some really good melodies lines in there. And obviously it’s a great message. I also thought the curveball of the production/back beat was a really nice, simple addition. You’ve got a knack for songwriting so just keep following your instincts.

I look forward to hearing more of your stuff buddy, I’m also a CSA member so hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet you soon. I just signed up to perform at the February 9th showcase so maybe I’ll see you. Welcome to Frettie, rock on.

John,

Welcome to Frettie! Great job. I think this is the start of something really powerful. Like JT said making lose vocals really stand out would be awesome!

Look forward to hearing more. Thanks for sharing!
