Frank,

Love the positivity expressed about the metaphor of life being a song.  And, the idea that we ultimately control how our life plays out.  The song reminded me of the 1973 Philly soul classic “Life is a song worth singing” by Johnny Mathis.

I know thia song is a work-in-progress, but it may be difficult for a listener to agree that they have a (“guilt-tripping mother,... toxic friends”, etc.).

Also, the first verse is essentially saying “wouldn’t you (the listener) agree….”.  Here, there’s a risk the listener may say “no” upon first hearing the statements. Thus, limiting listener engagement.

Keep working on this song. Empowerment is a wonderful thing.

Thank you Lee for listening and commenting. With this song I‘m not going for a cut or airplay, it may not be for everyone. Of course not everyone has a guilt-tripping mother, but everyone may know this kind of feeling that you can’t act the way you want because you’ll feel guilty somehow.

The Song of your Life

Written by Frank Renfordt

It began with a D major seventh
it will end on an E minor chord
it's all based on a system
of pain, release and reward
They say you don't hit the high notes
and your voice doesn't sound nice
They say you must change the groove
of the song of your life

The song of your life
is it sung by yourself
or who's gonna sing it to you
who rhymes the words to your tune
whose apron strings are you tied to
your guilt-tripping mother, your toxic friends
your old man’s ambitious plans
tell me who's on the mike
for the song of your life

You're supposed to get married
you're supposed not to be gay
you're supposed to make a fortune
going the American way
but if your dream is to be a dancer
then dance and don't think twice
dance to the rhythm
of the song of your life

The song of your life
is it sung by yourself
or who's gonna sing it to you
who rhymes the words to your tune
whose apron strings are you tied to
Your guilt-tripping mother, your toxic friends
your old man's ambitious plans
tell me who's gonna write
the song of your life

Make mistakes and learn to fail
don't keep your eyes on the prize
Raise your voice and sing along
to the song of your life

The song of your life
is it sung by yourself
or who's gonna sing it to you
who rhymes the words to your tune
whose apron strings are you tied to
Your guilt-tripping mother, your toxic friends
your old man's ambitious plans
tell them who's gonna write
the song of your life
tell them you gonna write
the song of your life
