About This Song

No particular story behind this one. The chorus came to me as I was driving. Later I wrote the verses around it. I wanted to try writing for the Southern Gospel genre but my concern with this song is that it is not biblical, per se.

Feedback Requested

Looking for anyone who has knowledge of the Southern Gospel genre...to let me know if this seems like a song that a Southern Gospel quartet would have interest in doing.

It is catchy, and I like the voice.

Thank you Ani. This demo was done by the Les Butler Quartet.

imho, pretty standard EARLY southern gospel—seems that southern gospel these days is often a little bit more “musically adventurous” (again, imho)—best wishes in your songwriting endeavors!

Thank you for your feedback Bob. You are absolutely correct. I am such a traditional writer, stuck in a time warp, as the saying goes. I know I lack innovativeness. Not sure what to do about that and likely I am too old now to figure it out. Thanks again for your comment. You were right on.

Thousands or maybe even millions of songs have found their way into our hearts using traditional chord structures. That’s why they became “traditional” forms.

I really like your writing and think this is a very nice song.

I hope Bob Abner doesn’t see my comment…LOL! He is my music theory teacher.

Great job Myrna!

Thank you Reid. I do know there are many bluegrass artists doing traditional bluegrass music at this time.  I haven’t been able to connect with them, but I know they are out there. Thanks again for your nice comments.

In the Shadow of the...

Written by Myrna Riquier

Some days are hard to handle, some nights are way too long
Sometimes the trouble's more than I can bear
But I can get to greener pastures, I can see my way quite clear
I can tell you how I'll get from here to there.

I travel with the Father, and the Holy Ghost
And I'm walking in the shadow of the Son.

When the skies are filled with dark clouds, lightnin’ flashing everywhere
I can move on to a place where skies are fair.
I can walk away from trouble, I can move right past that fire
I can tell you how I'll get from here to there.

I travel with the Father, and the Holy Ghost
And I'm walking in the shadow of the Son.

I have often felt the devil and you know how hard he tries
Just to claim your soul, he'll show up anywhere.
There's a place where he can't reach me, it's the journey that I'm on
I can tell you how I'll get from here to there.

I travel with the Father, and the Holy Ghost
And I'm walking in the shadow of the Son.
