About This Song

We lost dad in 2010 and this song is for him as well as mom and my siblings.

imho, a little too “formulaic” (patterned) for my taste—hear a small bit of Harry Chapin influence—good subject matter (particularly for those of us who have dads we fondly remember, though they are no longer with us). Best wishes in all your songwriting endeavors.

When I was just a boy
My father said look see
You clean up all your vegetables
You’ll be a big tall man like me

And when he spoke, I listened close
And I tried to emulate
The big tall man across the table
This boy could hardly wait

I’ll be a big tall man if I can
I’ll try and do it for ya dad
A big tall me is what I’ll be
I’ll try to make you happy

Well the years went by and I grew a stretch
It surely was a test
The big tall man was a long way off
I came up to my daddy’s chest

But I passed the time so patiently
Waiting for myself to sprout
And soon I could see eye to eye with my dad
Well, just about

I’ll be a big tall man if I can
I’ll try and do it for you dad
A big tall me is what I’ll be
I’ll try to make you happy
I’ll try to make you happy

Solo

I’ll be a big tall man if I can
I’ll try and do it for you dad
A big tall me is what I’ll be
I’ll try to make you happy

Well even though I’m now six foot some
And daddy’s down below
I know he was a better man
But how, I just don’t know

But I do know that he lived a good, full life
Until the day he died
Then I finally realized he meant
Be a big tall man inside

I’ll be a big tall man if I can
I’ll try and do it for you dad
A big tall me is what I’ll be
I’ll try to make you happy
I’ll try to make you happy
