About This Song

I traveled to my hometown to attend a funeral. Sitting in the pew in front of me was a mutual friend to me and the deceased, as well as a lifelong friend and classmate since 1st grade. Before the service began, she turned around and said, “I’m embarrassed for you to see all these wrinkles on my face.” I told her, “You look the same as I remember from our earliest days.” During the service, I couldn’t help consider the irony; the last time I had seen my friend was at a birthday party for another mutual friend. This song began coming together during my 60-mile drive back home. This is a rewrite to add a bridge.

Nice tender song—reminds me a little of a cross between David Wilcox and REALLY EARLY Seals & Crofts (back in the days when they had 20 fans, 15 of whom were relatives/close friends—this was back when I REALLY liked the songs they were putting out)—HA!!!  Anyway, I liked your song—I think you have a nice knack for turning tender feelings into a song, which I think is one of those lovely gifts, and is basically why I “follow” you on this site! As always, keep it up and best wishes musically!!!

Thank you, Bob!  Those are some especially kind words and so nice to hear, coming from a musician who plays the piano (jazz, no less) as well as you and comes from such a theory-based background!  FYI, I’ve got some serious computer issues, which have severely affected my ability to respond as I would like.  I’ll have a tech visit this coming week and hope to be up and running more fluidly before the end of next week - Thanks again & God Bless!

Hi Jack, I remember you have uploaded this song before. Is this a new version? I can’t remember the other one exactly. Whatever - this is a beautiful song and I like the reduced production, it fits very nice to the lyric.

Hi Frank, it is indeed the same musical track (good memory)!  I didn’t like the picture representing the song, so I pulled it down until I could slightly more organized with it.  I have made arrangements to have it produced, but I want to add a bridge and increase the tempo slightly.  I thought I’d solicit input regarding any other improvements I might consider.

I always appreciate your insight - Thank you!

FUNERALS & BIRTHDAYS (REWRITE TO...

Written by Jack Speer

They say time, changes everything,
The old and new, and in between.
And nothing here, looks quite the same;
The groves are gone, no passing trains.

But, friends of childhood days,
Suspend those aging ways.
I only wish I saw you more,
Instead of just at funerals & birthdays.

And In my eyes, you’ll never change,
Like winter’s skies and summer’s rain.

You appear, as you always did,
The way you were, back when we were kids.
And I don’t see your lines of age,
As we re-engage at funerals & birthdays.

In my eyes, you’ll never change,
Like winter’s skies and summer’s rain.

So, as we pay our last respects,
To a gentle man we won’t forget,
His memory, we’ll all embrace,
And speak of him at funerals & birthdays.

In my eyes, you’ll never change,
Like winter’s skies and summer’s rain.

Those playground days, that naive and honest age,
Before pretense and guise,
That bond we shared, when fate first had us paired,
Revealed your soul behind your eyes.

And, so it is until the end,
I’ll wish you well, ‘til we meet again,
As we choose our separate ways,
I’ll look for you at funerals and birthdays.

I’ll look for you at funerals and birthdays.
