About This Song

Having been fortunate to have played sports from junior high, through 2 colleges, I had numerous coaches. But, the coach who had the greatest influence on me, also coached my mother (basketball) in her high school years, as well as taught me how to swim when I was 6. He coached my high school years in football & baseball and is listed in the Florida High School Hall of Fame. Most of all, this man coached character and self-control. I never heard him swear or even raise his voice. In fact, if he said, "John Brown," you knew you were in trouble and you were about to run some laps. This song is NOT autobiographical, but it is about the greatest coach I've ever known, Coach Shaw Buck!

Jack, you did again! You crafted a touching, well-written song. I can just see (and hear) your coach. I’ve only heard a couple of your songs, but you’re already a favorite on this site. Keep up the good writing!

Thank you so much, Ditalian Cole!  It means a lot to me that you relate to my songs.  I thought “May 32” was a clever song and I liked the guitar lick at the into and at various spots throughout the song.  Are you near the Tampa area?

He coached our team in ’88,
Led us all the way to state,
Didn’t win.

Bounced right back in ’89,
That banner still hangs high with pride
In our school gym,
Thanks to him.

Before each game Coach would stand up in our bus;
He’d raise his hat up above his head as he’d say to us,

"Keep your head up, win or lose,
Give it all up, then accept what comes to you.
Spend more time looking forward
And less time looking back;
Rest well knowing you gave it all you had."

That sound advice sure served me well,
Helped me on two tours through hell
Here on earth,
Man, that desert burns.

Now, I’ve got medals on my chest,
A metal leg and no regrets,
I’ll be fine,
You won’t hear me whine.

I learned long ago life will challenge you,
So you face it with your greatest strength, your attitude.

Keep your head up, win or lose,
Give it all up, then accept what comes to you.
Spend more time looking forward
And less time looking back;
Rest well knowing you gave it all you had.

My old coach looks so peaceful in that suit and tie.
Son, I wish you could have known him; he was a blessing in my life.
Won’t you kneel with me as I pay my last respects?
He would have smiled had he known I had taught you this.

To the man who taught us how to live and how to give it all,
Rest well knowing you gave it all you had.
