About This Song

Not saying much about it, want to see if people get what it's about. From 2 weeks back, finished on deadline of Play for a Publisher but didn't want to be sad hearing changes after submitting lol! But all ready now, bring it on!

Any and all feedback welcome!

I am not much of a country fan, so I really don’t understand what spirit of country is.  But, it sounded like no matter where you are, you have the spirit of country, and that moving on and not giving up is all part of it.

Thanks Ani! Moving on, adapting and changing, definitely all part of it - never giving up is something I like to think I can do lol! Haven’t given up yet and I will keep on tryin’ til the day I’m dyin’ - sounds like a good line for something, in fact : )

Hi Tommy,  - nice idea, I like the lyrics but I’m missing a bit the Country feeling in the music - that could be a better match.  .. and again it stands out to me that your vocals are bit to much in the foreground, I would like to hear more from the instruments. Take care!

Thanks Frank! Hey anything that brings the instruments to the fore and moves my voice back is always a good thing! ; ) Singing is not my thing haha!

I was worried about whether it sounds country enough too. I was thinking of modern country stuff for sure, as part of how country has and always will keep evolving, with the thought that a producer and band would be able to country it up in a way I can’t as a player (something like Jason Aldean, which to me is very rock, other than the country voice) - and indeed mostly I was wondering how it would sound with a country voice, as whatever can be said about what my voice is, the one thing it is not is country!

But truth be told, I don’t know if production, arrangement, band and singer would indeed give it a country inflection or not… I’ll likely never know ; )

Would love to hear other thoughts on whether it could or could not have enough of a country edge to fit! Or of course if anyone else wants to play and sing it haha!

The Spirit of Country

Written by Tommy Grimes III

I am older than
Any man alive
I've learned to change my face, it's the way that I survive
Came of age in Tennessee
But born well before that
'cross the sea in foreign lands, my roots go that far back
I got the power to last
While the other fads pass

CHORUS
Well I started on the farm lands
And I headed to the oil fields
Travelled down the interstate to the lonely sound of 18 wheels and
Now I'm in the board rooms where the people make, break, close the deals
And one of these days I'll leave this Earth, come with ya to the new frontier
I'm the spirit of country, and I'm strong
Coz I keep moving on

I'm there for heartbreak and when
Two souls become one
I make crowds of people dance, give comfort while alone
You'll find me down the old dirt road
Or fishing by the lake
I'll be there if you're down and out, or gambling on the take
Whatever you go through
I'll be there for you

CHORUS
Well I started on the farm lands
And I've headed to the oil fields
Travelled down the interstate to the lonely sound of 18 wheels and
Now I'm in the board rooms where the people make, break, close the deals
And one of these days I'll leave this Earth, come with ya to those new frontiers
I'm the spirit of country, I'm still strong
Coz I keep moving on

I cross generations
I'm the music of this nation

I'm the spirit of country, I'm still strong
I'm the spirit of country, I'll stay strong
Coz I keep moving on
