About This Song

A lightly comedic song that I hope puts a smile on folks' faces - in keeping with this year's "write 'em and demo 'em without spending ages polishing what's just a demo", here is Pinball Machine!

VERSE 1
The sweat from beer had soaked through my elbows
I was staring into space
Nearly fell off my chair at a hand on my shoulder
Some old guy, a rye smile on his face
He said, "Ale's too weak for what ails ye"
And poured me a whiskey with this free advice

CHORUS
Life's like a pinball machine, it helps to have a lot of balls
It's like the old wild west, it's always best, if you keep an ace hidden close to your chest
I'll give you gardenin' advice, son you've got to grow a pear
Be like the rodeo clown, just dance around, any old bull that wants to drag ya down

VERSE 2
By the end of that bottle, we'd been friends forever,
Though I never did ask for his name
Finally fell off my chair when they called the last orders
I just laughed, I was too drunk for shame
He helped me to my feet and he steered me to the door
With one last repeat of those words he'd said before

CHORUS
Life's like a pinball machine, it helps to have a lot of balls
It's like the old wild west, it's always best, if you keep an ace hidden close to your chest
I'll give you gardenin' advice, son you've got to grow a pear
Be like that rodeo clown, just dance around, any old bull that wants to drag ya down

VERSE 3
I felt pretty bad when I woke the next mornin'
And with more than just my achin' head
I felt pretty mean that I'd drunk half his whiskey
Without a word about money being said
But when I looked into my wallet, where there'd been a stack of tens
Was one piece of paper, oh you've guessed just what it said

ENDING
I just smiled, coz I could already tell
Those words of advice were gonna pay me back well
