About This Song

This song is about that point in a relationship when somebody knows somethings up. It was written in the style of Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn...meant to be the last dance at a honky tonk type song.

I love the sound of this song. And the sound of your voice!
I don’t like the repeat of “I’ve never seen that man before.” I understand that’s the structure but I just don’t care for it there for some reason.
I’m also bothered by “I don’t remember what he said”. I’m pretty sure you’d remember. Or maybe he said nothing at all?
I like the “stormy weather at sea” line.
It’s close to being a really nice classic country song. I think it just needs a little tinkering….
I’d like to write with you if you have the time! Thanks!!

I enjoyed ur singing I see the influence. Question I assume the ship is ur relationship and it means the world to u . Then why would she sleep with the man . I may be off base there but kinda how I took it . Love the vocals. And music . Tweak the words a bit .. killer song

I’m trying to gather meaning from this. It sounds great.

Just the story. Is he a guy that accuses her of cheating. Like who is that man? But he already knows that she knows him? Is there nothing there and you don’t want to make something up to please him. Like you cheated before and now he says that about every man that you look at? That’s why the things were like stormy weather?

Then even though you worked it out, he just one day up and left?

The ending, I wonder is it a resolution, or the women repeating something to someone who is already gone? Like the ship at sea has sunk? It means the world to you but your now alone because he’s left. So the question is if he’s left, then her ship has sailed without her? Or something like that. If she is regressing or crying in her sheets, that makes sense. So maybe in the abstract form that’s what she’s doing?
This line He said he’d love me till the day we’re laid to rest: Was a tough one for me. Maybe because it repeats he and then he’d.

I hope that helps. It sounds beautiful.

Love the sound…simple and clean.

But like Brent I don’t really understand the gist of the story.  It seems like it changes perspectives and or who you are talking about.

I do love the line -
But this ship that we’ve been sailing on
It means the world to me

Very nice melody…

In my opinion it just needs a re-write and try to keep the perspective and who you are talking to or about.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback! I could see how the lyrics are a little confusing. Sometimes I wonder if a bit of mystery to the lyrics is a playful way to write, or if they should be more straightforward. I will consider changing the lyrics because it seems the general consensus of those who have heard it here does not like the mystery wink . Thanks everyone for listening!

Love this melody too…

It’s not so much of not liking mystery it’s more about the clarity of what is going on in the song…story….who’s talking to whom…

I have a very bad habit of doing what I call writing in my head…meaning I write a lyric and in my head it makes sense cause I know what I’m talking about…but to those not fortunate enough to be in my head (that’s totally a joke BTW…LOL) it’s not clear what’s going on.

All I did to break that habit was to have someone read my lyrics…anyone and see if it makes sense to them if not then back to the drawing board I go.

Also reading (no singing) your own stuff out loud to yourself helps too…like you’re reading a story…

Dont Make Me Lie to...

Written by Sandra Lyerly

Don't make me lie to you
Dont ask me questions you know the answer to
I know we’ve got a lot to work through
But Don't make me lie to you

I’ve never seen that man before
I didn't notice who just walked through that door
I just said Hi and nothing more
I’ve never seen that man before

I know that our time together
Has been stormy like the weather at sea
But this ship that we’ve been sailing on
It means the world to me

Don't make me lie to you
Dont ask me questions you know the answer to
I know we’ve got a lot to work through
But Don't make me lie to you

I dont remember what he said
That cold night when he left my bed
He said he’d love me till the day we’re laid to rest
I dont remember what he said

I know that our time together
Has been stormy like the weather at sea
But this ship that we’ve been sailing on
It means the world to me
