About This Song

My Celtic background shows in the guitar sounds in this one, with a folk/rock kind of feel. The song was once again about loss, and accepting the passing of time. Session singer used on this one.

Hey! I really like this song, and you are right about describing it, that its got a Celtic/folk rock feel to it. To me it sounds like Bruce Springsteen a little I think he had a few songs with Irish influences, possibly the album with Pete Seeger maybe?

I think the format of the song is great…the guitar solo parts and the structure make perfect sense. Also the singer’s tone is perfect for this song as well. Good choice there!

The one suggestion I have is about the number of words used in the verses. I think theres lines that could be less ‘sentances’ and more slang that would be easier to sing and remember and people could latch onto and increase its appeal. For example dropping pronouns or other connecting words…such as the line “cant say that I’m good, cant say that I’m bad” ....changing it to “Cant say I’m good, cant say I’m bad”  or….“oh you cant change the past no theres no turning back” ...that could be switched to “cant change the past, no turning back”.

I think dropping a few syllables here and there would make it more ‘songlike’ and allow the singer to sing more!

Just want you to know I think the song is great though, great message and its got a good feel which is the most important thing I think!

Thank you Sandra! I was a bit worried about having so much focus on the instrumental stuff - since 70s music is what I grew up with, having long intros or solos is something I love, but I know those are not so popular these days, so it’s good to hear positive feedback about someone other than me thinking it works smile

I think you are right about the number of words, I think I got stuck on having a certain pattern and obstinately kept it though less words would give the song (and maybe more importantly the singer!) some more room to breathe (literally as well as metaphorically perhaps!)

TY for the praise for the singer too, that was David Cagle, he did a great job including coming up with harmonies.

I will definitely revisit the lyrics and do a bit of pruning, though that version will likely have to stick with just me singing it initially, but worth it to find a slightly less crowded set of lyrics. Cheers!

The passing of years nice song Tommy “having long intros or solos is something I love, but I know those are not so popular these days”  I know Tommy, I feel the same way, that is too bad..Maybe they just ran out of ideas, although if go to UTUBE and put in Albert lee, Vince Gill, Brent Mason etc, you will find some of the best Guitar players there are.

Like the Irish flavor, loved the guitar solo tag and the gears/years line made me smile.

Okay, I just read the other comments. Kudos to everybody who still loves long instrumental solos—keep the faith!

Thanks Kyle! Yes instrumental solos, quite the question : ) I think there is definitely room for them and tracks featuring them, but that room might not be at the top of the charts lol! Even Brad Paisley, who is a virtuoso, keeps ‘em short.

But, not everything needs to be aiming for the top of the charts and I do indeed want to keep the faith alive, and hopefully help keep the kind of music I like to listen to going, as well as hopefully finding something more commercial (to pay for the other stuff I want to do, I guess!)

The Passing of Years

Written by Tommy Grimes III

Looking on back on the passing of years
I'm not ashamed to cry a river of tears
Over people that I've known and loved who've since passed on
And it doesn't matter what your beliefs say
I know they're still with me in so many ways
Hope they put in a good word for me when my time comes

Well you can't change the past, no there's no turning back
Nothing that lasts, always something you lack
But you've got to let go of your fears of the passing of years

Looking on over the things that I've done
Some I did right, some were so wrong
Guess that makes me a man trying to get by from day to day
Can't say that I'm good, can't say that I'm bad
Can't even say lived life with all I had
But I still soldier on, keep on marching right through this fray

Oh you can't change the past, no there's no turning back
There's nothing that lasts, always something you lack
Don't get ground up in the gears of the passing of years

I tried to find love and I tried to make it last
But each time it slipped right through my grasp
There was never the forever that all those old fairy tales say
So I set my eyes forward on days yet to come
For there are a few things that I have left undone
And I try to find a smile each morning, though every dawn's grey

Oh I can't change the past, no I can't turn it back
There's nothing that lasts, always something I lack
I won't be sad when the end nears, no more passing of years.
