I love the imagery in this song!  It paints the picture of his world and then his world at his parent’s home that he’s missing… perfectly! SO SO well written. I love the use of “yard” at the beginning so you don’t think of prison yet… but you start pointing to the concept with the “time” reference.  I really love this.  With a Brent and Steve combo, you can’t go wrong! So good!

Folsom Prison Blues in December, except way more beautiful! I love the lyrics! I see Cool Hand Luke in this too. Neat concept! The only only only thing I would say about this, and trust me, I think this song is genius….but its just I dont know how song demos work and perhaps you didn’t write or have control of the melodic elements to the song, but the acoustic guitar playing continual arpeggios gets to me a little, perhaps the song would be a little more ‘lonesome sounding’ if the instruments were less constant. Love your stuff!

Cool take on Christmas, great model for how looking at something ordinary from a completely different perspective can make a great song. Have you tried playing this in prison? I’ll bet it would go over well.

Brent and Steve, boy this song brought me to my knees.  Our son is in prison and at the beginning of 2018 I took life on with honesty with all it’s triumphs and trageties.  This song was like feeding me with a spoon.  Our son is an awesome songwriter who has written some great songs and when he gets out, I’ll have a great co-writer.  Beautiful ‘story teller’ music soothing us to see the song as beautiful and lighthearted ‘mistakes mistaken’ are everywhere.  Life is what what you make it sometimes:) And thank you for writing it!!!!

Christmas From Prison

Written by Brent Baxter

(Brent Baxter, Steve Leslie)

Snowflakes are falling, one by one filling the yard
He hears White Christmas somebody’s learning on guitar
The letter he’s trying to write
Is just one big waste of time
But with this much time, who really cares
So he’ll send it on out
To their old house
To a woman who’s not even there

CHORUS:
And it’s Joy To The whole damn World
To all the good boys and girls
With their turkey and mistletoe
Presents and holiday cheer
Merry Christmas from prison
And a happy New Year

He knows right now his mama is saying, “Ya’ll, it’s time to eat”
And his sister’s young’uns are running and fighting for a seat
Daddy’s in the living room
Saying “I’ll be there soon
There’s two minutes left in the game”
And his mama will cry
Like she does every time
Somebody mentions his name

CHORUS: [REPEAT]

CHORUS:
Joy To The whole damn World
From all us boys and girls
Putting X’s on calendars
Chalking up another long year
Merry Christmas from prison
Homesick? Who isn’t?
Merry Christmas from prison
