About This Song

Jimmy Borja whom I met on my trip to Nashville last March have stayed in touch. We try to write via skype from time to time. Late in October - he suggested a Xmas Song. I started humming to some melancholy chords and "Every Single Christmas" happened.

Does the song work - its meant to be nostalgic and melancholy but also make you happy too!

Hey, Mikalyn!
I like the overall vibe of the song.  It’s solid, as I’ve come to happily expect from you.  But I have a few areas I think you can improve upon.

In the 1st verse, I start getting confused with “when you say you’re on your way” through the end of the verse.  It sounds like you’re maybe talking about a lover or a family member with whom you’ve been estranged.  “People can change” makes me think maybe this person is troubled or caused trouble, but there’s hope that he/she is a better person now.

I’m having to do a lot of thinking.  That, of course, takes me out of the emotion of the song.

The chorus makes me think it’s a lover with “my heart will never stray.”  But why have you not seen this person in a year?  And why are “all eyes on the door?” Okay… so probably not a lover.

I think some simple changes can help with clarifying that it’s all about family.

The “calling to say you’re on your way” line could point more to something like “cousins call to say they’re on their way” or something.  And “family can wander and people can change” or “family can wander and hair can turn gray” or “nieces can grow up and uncles can gray” or something to be more family-centric (with imagery).

Just a few thoughts.  Hope it helps!  Please pay it forward by leaving a comment on another writer’s song.  Thanks!

thanks Brent - I love your suggestions for the pre chorus.  That is exactly what I was hinting towards.  Its about family being drawn no matter what - back towards home at christmas, even after the loss of a loved one during the year, its meant to be about clinging to the traditions that hold us together.  I love “family can wander and people can change”  thank you - will start to bring that into my live performances smile  - really appreciated

Nice. Wonderful melody. I agree with Brent.  I was expecting the song to be about the relationship with the person she was waiting to come through the door.  I was a bit confused throughout the song.  I would take another stab at it because it’s worth it!  It’s a beautiful melody that is still staying with me as I type this.  If that is you singing, you have a fantastic voice.  I’m looking forward to hearing more of your stuff!

Every Single Christmas

Written by Mikalyn Hay

Written by Mikalyn Hay and Jimmy Borja

as the snow begins to fall
and the roads are slowing down
when the lights are all strung up
all the trees are glowing now
when you are calling to say you are on your way
all eyes are on the door
people can wander and people can change
but its no matter because one thing remains smile

Chorus
every single xmas
is different but the same
cause even though its been a year
my heart will never stray

every single xmas
the tables rearranged
and room is made for everyone
to come home and feel safe
every single xmas

Verse 2
when the boxes are unwrapped
and the kids are running around
as the parents sit and wait
for them all the to settle
you could dream of a summer sunny day
but who could ask for anything more

Chorus
