There's a precious man in our Nashville neighborhood named Jesse. We've gotten to know him from walking by his home over the last year... Many times Jesse has his Gospel music coming from his car radio so he can listen to it in the mornings. One day we commented to him that it sounded good and his response was "I'm just having church on the pros." I heard a song in that response...and this is it....
Any feedback is welcome.
OK this is SUCH GREAT feedback! All three issues were things we toiled over. IN fact…We have a version where he sang “SINGS” so I’ll pop it right into the mix…
I was on the fence on him talking to her… or God… but we were trying to keep it pretty “spiritually” neutral for a country pitch and I think a lot of people who lose people talk to those loved ones… but that isn’t really church is it? SO this is GOOD input!
Maybe we should change the last chorus (after church bells to) “Yeah even on a quiet Sunday morn.” Hmmm… I love this feedback. Gonna take a minute and go pay it forward on someone else’s song.
THANK YOU BRENT!

Church on the Porch

He’s sitting there in that beat up folding chair
Black coffee and a grateful sunrise prayer
God’s blessed him with a good life and so much more
So now Jesse’s havin church on the porch
He’s thinkin bout his bride of 40 years
And all the talks they had sittin right there
Until He meets her on the other shore
Ol’ Jesse’s havin church on the porch
And he talks to his angel up in heaven
He tells her he’s still doing fine
He plays that hymn they used to sing together
Wipes a tear and plays it one more time
No, It don’t have to be a Sunday morn’
For ol’ Jesse to have church on the porch
Down the street he hears the church bells ring
He drifts on back to the day he first believed
But God’s not only found behind those doors (no)
So now Jesse’s having church on the porch
CHORUS REPEAT
No, It don’t have to be a Sunday morn’
For ol’ Jesse to have church on the porch

Hey, Donna! Thanks for sharing this song. Starts off with some great imagery. Really pulls me right in. Dig the vibe.
One thing that kinda “bumped” for me was “he plays that hymn.” Is it on guitar? CD? It took me out of the song for a second to figure that out. I’m guessing guitar? But I’m just guessing. You could say “hums” or “sings” for “strums” or some other way to make it self-explanatory. That would help me.
And personally, I’d like to see a little more God in this. I get that it’s a love song… but it seems he’s worshipping his wife more than God- and that’s not church. I love the vibe and where you’re going with this overall, but that kinda bugs me. What about something like this:
And he talks to his Savior up in heaven
Says “tell my sweetheart I’m doing fine”
He strums a hymn they used to sing together
Wipes a tear and plays it one more time
No, it don’t have to be a Sunday morn’
For ‘ol Jesse to have church on the porch
And in the last verse, when I hear church bells ringing, I think it’s Sunday morning. I could be wrong, but that’s where I go in my head. But your chorus says it doesn’t have to be Sunday morn. But now I think it IS Sunday morning. That bumps for me, too. What if he just sees the cross and steeple down the street from his porch?
I know I’m being kinda picky- but I really like what you have here! A lot of good work has gone into this. Keep at it, Donna!
