About This Song

This song is about the times when the only way to get through something is by pouring yourself a drink and thinking it out.

Hey, Joseph!  Thanks for sharing your song.  And welcome to Frettie!  First of all, I like your song’s title.  I dig the chorus, too.  I think with the right production, it could be really cool.

I think the 2nd verse kind of defuses the chorus.  You basically say the Whiskey Revival isn’t going to work, at least not for long.  Then in the 3rd verse, you say it’s probably better just to pray.  (While I agree with that statement,) It makes the song feel at odds with itself.

It’s really philosophical, which is fine - but it’s a lot of “telling” and not enough “showing.” Especially in the 2nd verse.

Also, you write a check in your chorus that your verses can’t cash.  You say you’ve been where the listener stands, but you never back up (or “prove”) that statement in the verses.  The chorus is a really important piece of real estate.  If you make a big “I’ve been there” statement in the chorus, I kind of expect you to follow up on it somewhere in the song (after all, I hear it every time I hear the chorus).

I hope that helps.  Please pay it forward by leaving a comment or review on another writer’s song.  Thanks!

First of all, thanks for the feedback! Getting writing advice from someone with your knowledge and skill set is invaluable. I totally agree that I could put my point of view in there to prove “I’ve stood where you’re standing before”. As far as the second verse, I need to make it more clear that I mean you can try to keep your troubles of your mind WITHOUT having a drink, but sometimes a drink is all it takes. And in the third verse, I tried to convey that you should only think it over with a drink (drink it over? Maybe a new song right there!) when you need it most because you can go down a bad road if you do it all the time. But this may be a case of what you talked about today of having the curse of knowledge, where I know he story, but it’s not clear to the listener. Again, thank you for your feedback, I’ll definitely look at how I can rework some things.

I love the opening line! The harmony chorus is just super. Now on a side note, I don’t really like the message. But as a life story I could see it but then it says “you need that old time whiskey revival”. In most cases that is what probably got the guy in trouble in the first place! Been there and done that! LOL. But this is a good song with guts. Somethings Hank jr would have done in his hey day. it might have legs.

Oh I see it changes to pro and con as far as the drinking. Hmm… a little better. LOL

I try not to read anyone else comments . I just feel like it’s been so overdone in country . Red neck , trucks, getting stuck, etc . Don’t get me wrong , heck I got a few as well my friend . But hey it’s what Nashville wants . Keep up good job

Whiskey Revival

Verse 1:
You know I’ve got no problem with the Lord
He’s helped me out so many times before
But I’ll tell you son, sometimes to think
You’ll have to pour yourself a drink
And chase away the things you can’t outrun

Chorus:
Do you feel like it’s too late to save your soul
Do you feel like there is no survival
Well I’ve stood where you’re standing before
You need that old time whiskey revival

Verse 2:
You can try to keep your troubles off your mind
And that might seem to work out for a time
But the thing about time is it never sleeps
And it’s gonna be all you can do to keep
Your head and your heart aligned

Chorus:
Do you feel like it’s too late to save your soul
Do you feel like there is no survival
Well I’ve stood where you’re standing before
You need that old time whiskey revival

Verse 3:
Well it’s not something to get you through each day
Most times it’s best to get on your knees and pray
It’s only when you need it most
It ain’t a party, it ain’t a toast
That whiskey river can sweep you far away

Chorus:
Do you feel like it’s too late to save your soul
Do you feel like there is no survival
Well I’ve stood where you’re standing before
You need that old time whiskey revival
