Keith, I know this song is personal to you, but here are some random thoughts.

I think you’re putting too many ideas into the song.  You’ve got 8 lines for the homesite, then 8 lines on the kids.  At this point, I’m still not sure what the song is about.

In the chorus, I think it’s a love song, but then you say “life’s been good to me”.  When you say “Here’s the thing”, to me that implies one thing… so, is it your love or your life?

If you strip it all down, it’s basically a love song.  I’d try to put more emphasis on that in the first couple of verses.

Not sure what your goals are for this song.  If you’re doing the singer/songwriter thing, by all means go for it.  If your writing for commercial success (an artist cutting your song), I think you’re reducing the pool of potential artist by using concrete details like how long you’ve lived in the house and when you’re children were born.

Keep writing!

Great that you can write an autobiography song. It would go over well here where i live
lot of singer songwriters perform here

I dig your style

Hey, Keith- thanks for sharing your song!  I love how you put me in the scene with all the imagery. Also dig the easy rolling country feel.

I realize it’s an auto-biography song, so I’m not looking at it as a “pitch” song.  That being said, I’d like for it to get to the first chorus first.  Maybe either do verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus or just cut down on the homeplace stuff so you get to the chorus faster.

The title “Here’s the thing” seems a little disconnected from the verses. “Here’s the thing” to me, anyway, feels like a summation.  “I told you this and that, but here’s the thing- the bottom line of everything I’ve told you.”  Yet you switch to a love song in the chorus.  The verses aren’t leading there.

But overall I still like it.  I feel like I know you better now.  Please pay it forward by leaving a comment on another writer’s song.  Thanks!

Here’s The Thing

Written by Keith Vincent

HERE’S THE THING

LOOKING OUT MY BACKDOOR WINDOW
THRU THE MORNING FOG AND THE FEBRUARY
RAIN
AT A WEATHERED SHED
AND SOME FLOWERING APPLE TREES
WE PLANTED LATE LAST SPRING

A CHAINLINK FENCE THAT BORDERS
THE ONLY LAND WE EVER OWNED
IT’S BEEN OUR SANCTUARY
FOR TWENTY FIVE YEARS
WE/VE CALLED IT HOME

IN THIS HOUSE WE RAISED OUR
CHILDREN
TWO GIRLS BORN NINE YEARS APART
THEY’VE ALWAYS LOOKED SO MUCH ALIKE
BUT THEY’RE DIFFERENT
AS DAYLIGHT AND DARK

THEY’VE BEEN THE WORLD
OUR LIVES REVOLVED AROUND
SINCE OUR FIRST WAS BORN IN
NINETY ONE
NOW BOTH ARE GROWN
BUT WE STILL WORRY
SEEMS A PARENT’S
WORK IS NEVER DONE

CHORUS:
HERE’S THE THING
I’VE ONLY BEEN IN LOVE ONE TIME
ONLY HAD ONE GIRL THAT I CALLED MINE
AND AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
SHE’S STILL HERE BESIDE ME
HERE’S THE THING
WE WERE BABIES OF THE BOOMER YEARS
OUR DREAMS NEVER STRAYED TOO FAR FROM HERE
I GOTTA SAY WITH EVERYTHING INSIDE ME
HERE’S THE THING........
THIS LIFE’S BEEN GOOD TO ME

WE STILL HOLD EACH OTHERS HANDS
SHE STILL MAKES ME FEEL I WAS EIGHTEEN
LAST MONTH FIFTY SNUCK UP ON ME
LIKE A DOUBLE SHOT OF DEVIL’S CUT JIM
BEAM
I PRAY GOD WILL TAKE ME FIRST
CAUSE I WON’T BE WORTH
A NICKEL ON MY OWN
AND IF I SHOULD DIE TOMORROW
HAVE ‘EM CARVE THESE WORDS INTO MY
STONE

CHORUS:
HERE’S THE THING
I’VE ONLY BEEN IN LOVE ONE TIME
ONLY HAD ONE GIRL THAT I CALLED MINE
AND AFTER ALL THESE YEARS SHE’S STILL
HERE BESIDE ME
HERE’S THE THING
WE WERE BABIES OF THE BOOMER YEARS
OUR DREAMS NEVER STRAYED
TOO FAR FROM HERE
I GOTTA SAY WITH EVERYTHING INSIDE ME
HERE’S THE THING........
THIS LIFE’S BEEN GOOD TO ME
