Jayne, another great song.  Thanks for reposting with the lyric sheet.  I tend to always read the lyrics before listening to the song, just to see if anything jumps out.

The only criticism I have is the number of “and’s” in the song.  I feel a few of them could, or should, be dropped.  If a phrase would have more meaning if the “and” in front of it was dropped, I lean toward dropping it.  Does the last line of V1 have more meaning if you said “I’d listen to you breathe and dream, nothing felt more right”?  You see where I’m going.

Are you contradicting yourself in the chorus?  You go from “our trust was everything” to “our love was the only thing that mattered”.  Probably a small thing, but to me, it has to be one or the other.

Overall great job!

Thank you Phillip.  I appreciate your feedback.  I agree that eliminating “and” and “but"s from lyrics is always a good idea. Good call. I disagree with you about the two lines:
-When our trust was everything
-And our love was the only thing that mattered
They say different things and compliment each other instead of contradict.  They are both saying something positive about the way their relationship was.  They aren’t opposites.  They trusted each other and their love was the most important thing to them.
Anyway, probably more of an explanation than you wanted to read.
Thanks for listening.

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but the logic part of my brain keeps saying if trust is “everything”, then love can’t be the “only thing” that matters, as trust would also matter.

I think that trust is part of love.  So the reason why love was the only thing that mattered to them was because of things like trust.  SI could name more… trust, communication, compromise, etc.. all are subsets of love.
When you say “when our trust was everything”, you’re saying… when we truly trusted each other.  It’s just a saying.

I found this song real easy to sink into and let it carry me into its world. I love it. It just sounds like a classic to me. I thought the lyrics managed to convey the idea without effort, and it made perfect sense to me. I want to hear songs like this on the radio.

i agree with Phil that these 2 lines are not quite right.  i know you want these lines to complement one another but IMO they do not.

When our trust was everything
And our love was the only thing that mattered

When our trust meant everything
And our love was ___ something that still mattered

IMO these changes are inclusive and do complement one another.  it is a fine line like Phil said but there is a difference.  The underscores are there cuz I think there is a word missing to keep the meter going.

I think this is a great song.  Well done.

Thanks for the thoughts Brian.
I think if you look at it in a conversational way… a person would say “when our trust was everything” etc.. I really don’t get at all why this seems off to you and Phil… but that’s ok. I am not one bit opposed to rewrites and constructive criticism.. very open.  But in this particular case, I respectfully disagree.  smile

Fall Backwards

Written by Jayne Sachs

Fall Backwards
Les Bowe, Jayne Sachs

We could talk without words
Love without hurt
And just one touch could keep us up til the sun would rise

You'd fall asleep on my chest
Girl, I loved that the best
I'd listen to you breathe and dream and nothing felt more right

Chorus:
And it's still you and it's still me
And we still got those memories
to catch us if we‘d let go and remember
Before the hurt before the blame
When our trust was everything
And our love was the only thing that mattered
Baby, let's fall backwards
Fall backwards

It was here on this bed
My hands behind your head
To hold you so you could lay down slow and time was ours to take

Looking deep in your eyes
Staring right back at mine
Never thought the day we’d look away would lead us to this place
so far from where we came (lift as you see fit!)

CH

Back to tracing where we’ve been
Back to craving hands on skin
Back to needin’ what we were
And what we’ll be again

CH

Baby let's fall
Baby let's fall backwards
Fall backwards
