About This Song

About an old old man that loses his wife and inherits the family dog. They have to start over in life, just the two of them. I wrote, produced and performed the song, so if there is something you don't like about the song, I'm to blame.

Feedback Requested

Basically I don't know what to ask of the listener outside of "do you like it?" And if you are not a dog owner, does the song still mean anything to you?

Hey, Robert!  Thanks for sharing your song.  Interesting idea, that’s for sure.  It has a “Whispering” Bill Anderson vibe to it.  (And Whispering Bill is a legend, so that ain’t a bad thing.)

I guess what I was hoping for would be more emotional weight to it.  Sure, she left you… with her dog… then you and the dog get along…

But so what?  It’s kind of interesting, but I want to hear some layering in there.  Is the dog helping you get along without your girl?  Are you helping each other?  I think there has to be something more to this idea.  Otherwise, it’s just about a guy and his dog.  But starting off with the wife leaving, I want some sort of resolution that wraps around to her leaving.

Hope that helps.  Please pay it forward by commenting on another writer’s song.  Thanks!

Thanks Brent… I’m thinking I did answer your questions you have presented but maybe that is because I am too close to it and don’t see it. I wonder also if this is a philosophical difference in our styles. I am always conscious of not being too direct with a lyric and not allowing the listener to fill in some of the blanks.

Thanks for taking the time to review. I will keep you and the group updated on whether I can get anyone to take the song. As you mentioned, I’m thinking it would be an older artist no longer on a label but which they might take him and the song for a single release. Whispering Bill would be perfect, of course, but he is getting up there and don’t know if he does recordings anymore. Ray Stevens rejected the song but I was told he did listen to it several times in considering it. Ray too is getting up there but he is opening a theatre in Nashville this summer so is keeping active.

(Verse 1)
G B7
My wife had left me, some years ago...
Em C
And when she left me suddenly, and I was all alone with our dog...
G D
And he was always kind of her dog, he snuggled up to her...
Em C
And he loved her so much, he'd give her kisses...
G D G C G D
But when she left, he only had me... and I only had him.

(Verse 2)
G B7
I learned to live my life kinda starting all over again...
Em C
I had to cook the meals, wash the clothes, and look after him...
G D
And once we got into a routine and we knew each other so well...
Em C
No matter what we did, neither one would tell...
G D G C G D
Like left and right hand, or left and right paw, together we did it all...

(And he loved me singing to him)
(Chorus)
G D
Get along little doggie, get along...
Em C
Get along little doggie, get along...
G D G C G D
Get along little doggie, get along... and I'll meet you back home...

(Verse 3)
G B7
Well I'd cook the dinner, and he'd go play with a ball...
Em C
But when it's time to eat, he's back, and we'd share it all...
G D
And as it got dark, he'd jump up on my lap,
Em C
And he'd make himself right comfortable and take a nap...
G D G C G D
And I'd sit and watch the news, and I'd start to snooze, we were a match...
