The idea of the song came to me when I heard that a little girl I know had been diagnosed with leukemia (she's well today). I started to think about how she felt, alone, sad and vulnerable at the hospital, a long way from home. But for me, the hospital theme was a dead-end so I decided to change it to being locked away while keeping the overall theme. Don't know if I succeeded or not. All input is welcome!
Note: A few people already commented on using "the can", saying it's a term with a rather archaic ring to it. So I'll probably change that.
Everything: lyrics, melody, arrangement etc. A few people already commented on using "the can", saying it's a term with a rather archaic ring to it. So I'll probably change that.
Hi Brett!
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share your thoughts and reflections. Really appreciate it!
Love the “on the road” idea as a possible route. Will dig into it and see where it leads me. I’ve touring quite a lot, knowing how hard it is deal with the fact the you’re away from the ones you love the most while doing what you love doing.
I’ll definitely have a shot at it, and if there’s anyone in this community that would like to co-write the lyrics with me, just reach out to me!
All the best,
Martin

The jury found me guilty
of a crime I didn't do
1,000 days in the can
So I'm writing this to you
There's no view from where I'm standing
No sound coming through these walls
Still I can see your shadow
Hear the echoes of your calls
Sing me a love song
Sing me back home
You’re the dream I hold on to
Sing me a love song
Sing me back home to you
Every morning when I wake up
I pretend you're by my side
Holding me close, whispering
Everything will be alright
The days are not my saviors
The nights are not my friends
All I ever believe in
Is the comfort of your hands
Sing me a love song
Sing me back home
You’re the dream I hold on to
Sing me a love song
Sing me back home to you

Hey, Martin! Thanks for sharing! If you’re worried about “in the can,” you can always use “in a cell” or “in the pen.”
I dig the vibe. Feels smoky… I can almost see a guy playing in a lonely bar with his whiskey glass on the top of the piano. I dig it.
The prison thing is pretty… specific. It’s good, and I get it. So this is just a thought- not really a suggestion…
What if the guy is just on the road because of his job or circumstance, and he’s saying this to her over the phone? Artists, who spend a ton of time on the road, could relate, as could anyone who’s career takes them away from the people they love.
Just a thought. Overall, I like it! Beautiful, haunting song.
